Pigeon Wigs release their latest single and announce debut EP
Cardiff 6-piece riotous rockers Pigeon Wigs release their second single Death Of A King and announce their debut EP Rock By Numbers released 10th June on Clwb Music. The single comes just days after the band pack out Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff for their biggest hometown headline show to date.
Death Of A King sees Pigeon Wigs continue to blow all expectations out of the water when it comes to what Wales has to offer the rest of the world in new music. The single, described by frontman Harry as; "It's [Death Of A King] like getting mugged in a dark alley by rock and soul while 90’s R&B keeps lookout", is quintessentially Pigeon Wigs. A bombastic track, laden with harmonies and huge sounding drums and, this time around, a glorious brass section. A clear indication that the band are making all the right moves and all the right noise.
Death Of A King, penned by Harry, is his personal and emotional tribute to The Screaming Eagle of Soul, Charles Bradley.
"I was lucky enough to see him [Charles] perform live at Green Man Festival in 2015, his haunting raspy voice and massive stage presence (capes galore) forever burned in my brain" explains lead singer Harry.
He continues; "When I found out he'd died, on a grey overcast September afternoon, I sat down and started writing this song, more as a way to deal with the news than to actually write anything of worth. The lyrics are about me hoping the news is wrong but ultimately realising there's nothing I can do about it. I really love this song and hope this love letter, with it's big brass and cooing backing, is one he would approve of. I even painted Charles and used that painting as the single artwork".
Death Of A King's accompanying video, however, is an insight into just how much fun Pigeon Wigs really are. Harry explains; "The Death of a King music video is about the crumbling of an empire and a great excuse to throw food at your mates.". If the video looks looks like a riot, just imagine what it's like to see them perform live.
Having already received glowing praise from Adam Walton at BBC Radio Wales and again from Bethan Elfyn, and a multitude of online press praise including A&R Factory and Americymru, Death Of a King and the bands debut EP Rock By Numbers is sure to solidify the band as true ones-to-watch as they continue their rampage around the South Wales music scene and beyond.
